Warhawk’s New DRM: Sony Responds

The news that the digital download version of Sony’s new PlayStation 3 game Warhawk would have a more restrictive DRM policy than other PS3 games has raised some questions about the company’s commitment to their originally stated policy of game sharing. This morning, Sony spokesperson Dave Karraker said that the change was made “in order to protect our investment in this ground-breaking game and maintain our ability to offer a 24-hour free online gameplay experience.”

Here’s the official fine print:

“One time fee for download or use solely by the purchasing PSN account on up to five PS3 units, with no more than one activated PS3 unit within a 24 hour period. Content may not be used by any other account.”

As for future titles, Karraker says that Sony “will be evaluating each game made available on the PlayStation Network in terms of development cost, maintenance cost, server costs and other factors.”

The Blu-Ray disc version of Warhawk that will be sold in retail stores starting today does not carry the restrictions that tie the downloadable game to a single online account, Karraker said.
